German RS Aero 9 Championships Starnberger See

German RS Aero 9 Championships at Intersport Thallmair Oktoberpokal – Deutscher Touring YC, Starnberger See, Munich, Germany, 19/20 Oct

Report by Jon Mills

Twenty two entries from Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, France and Italy travelled to the Deutsche Touring Yacht Club on the beautiful Starnberger See near Munich for the German RS Aero 9 National Championships and generous sponsorship from Intersport Thallmair ensured every entrant went home with a prize and gift of some sort.

On Saturday, with light winds forecast, the PRO initially hoisted the postponement flag whilst waiting for the forecasted North Easterly to arrive. By mid afternoon there was enough breeze for the race team to launch their impressive remote controlled marks from the club and send them out into the lake to their respective positions. The PRO and team did a great job of getting three back to back races smoothly started whilst the wind increased steadily as each race progressed from an initial 6kts, increasing to 8kts for the final race. A familiar pattern emerged in each race with Marcus Walther (GER), Tim Woodcock (FRA), Anne Cybok (GER) and Heiko Maier (SUI) trading places at the front of the fleet.
With the wind and light fading, the PRO shortened course for the last race to enable everyone to get back to the club for some generous Bavarian hospitality.

Day two unfortunately saw no wind and a mist covering the lake, which whilst picturesque didn’t allow for exciting racing. By mid day with no prospect of any wind arriving the PRO wisely cancelled racing for the day meaning the standings from the previous day stood. The 2024 German RS Aero 9 National Champion is therefore Marcus Walther, with Tim Woodcock second and Anne Cybok third.

Thanks to Deutsche Touring Yacht Club for hosting and to Intersport Thallmair for their support!

Next up for the German RS Aeros is the Letzte Helden at Blankeneser SC on the river Elbe at Hamburg on 23/24 Nov to close the season.
